The Shichirin: A Traditional Japanese Cooking Stove, Reimagined for Modern Life
For centuries, charcoal has been at the heart of Japanese cooking. Around 400 years ago, a portable charcoal grill called the “Shichirin” became a household staple. Its brilliant, timeless design is still available in traditional tool shops across Japan. The Shichirin is incredibly versatile—perfect for grilling fresh ingredients, cooking with pots and pans, or even providing warmth.

An Update for the Modern World
As much as we love tradition, a 400-year-old appliance doesn’t always fit our modern lives. We saw an opportunity to update this classic tool, making it safer, cleaner, and more convenient for today’s food lovers. This vision is what led us to create the YOKA SHICHIRIN++.
Key Features
Clean & Durable Stainless Steel
Traditional Shichirin are made from diatomaceous earth—a heavy, fragile material that can’t be washed. We solved this by crafting the YOKA SHICHIRIN++ entirely from high-quality stainless steel. It’s durable, portable, and completely washable, making cleanup a breeze.

Easy to Light & Extinguish
A traditional Shichirin has no lid, requiring a special container called a “hikeshi-tsubo” to extinguish the coals. The YOKA SHICHIRIN++ includes a matching lid; simply place it on top to safely put out the fire. There’s no need to handle hot charcoal, making it a much safer experience.

The extinguished charcoal, known as “keshi-zumi,” can be reused. The YOKA SHICHIRIN++ features a unique charcoal basket that you can lift out, making it easy to relight the coals for your next barbecue. Simply add a fire starter to the basket, and you’re ready to go—no chimney starter required.

The Joy of Gathering Around the Fire
In Japan, there is a rich culture of sharing a meal around a central fire. From “nabe” (hot pot) to “yakiniku” (grilled meat), the fire is a place to connect with loved ones, cook together, and enjoy conversation. We believe that this simple, engaging act of cooking over a flame is a special experience—one that feels new and meaningful in our modern world.
Available for International Shipping
We are excited to share the YOKA SHICHIRIN++ with the world through our new global online store. This is currently the only place to purchase it from outside of Japan. We hope it brings a new kind of joy to your table.
